How we calculate TCO
Total Cost of Ownership over 5 years includes every predictable expense.
Purchase price
Base MSRP at launch (256GB variant for consistency). We use official manufacturer pricing.
Battery replacement
One battery service at year 3, based on official brand's service pricing. e.g For iPhones, we use Apple's out‑of‑warranty battery rate.
Screen repair
One screen replacement over 5 years, priced at official service center rates e.g (AppleCare+ not assumed).
Depreciation
Calculated using historical resale data and brand's Trade In values. We model a 5‑year depreciation curve specific to each model tier.
Resale value (credit)
Estimated trade‑in value at year 5, sourced from brand's Trade In and secondary market averages. This amount is subtracted from total costs.

A 100‑point rating that measures how well a phone holds up over 5 years, not just specs.
Longevity (50 points)
Software update commitment (years), IP rating, build materials, and expected battery degradation. We favor devices with 5+ years of OS updates.
Repairability (30 points)
Based on iFixit repairability scores, availability of official parts, self‑repair programs, and the cost of common repairs.
Financial Value (20 points)
Resale value retention after 2 and 5 years, TCO efficiency (cost per feature), and trade‑in program strength.
Total SyncScore
Scores above 85 are exceptional; 70–84 is very good; below 60 indicates significant ownership drawbacks.
Where our data comes from
Repair costs are sourced directly from brand's official service pricing pages and repair cost estimator. We update these quarterly.
Resale & depreciationDepreciation models use brand Trade In values, Swappa historical data, and carrier trade‑in offers. We publish our depreciation curves openly.
iFixit repairability scores are the primary input, supplemented by our own analysis of parts availability and self‑repair documentation.
Update lifespanWe track manufacturer software update commitments (e.g., Apple's 5+ years, Samsung's 7 years for flagships) and adjust scores accordingly.
